L St. Runners Rull, McGuire and Morgan Marathon Bound

The L Street Running Club (LSRC), has become a well-established organization that not only boasts fine athletes and encourages, by example, a healthy life style, it’s also a group of individuals who pride themselves in working on behalf of all sorts of worthy charities. They have hosted road races over the span of their many years of existence which raise funds that then are donated to those groups that need them and put those funds to good use in efforts to improve the quality of life for others.
This year as they do every year, the LSRC has many of its members training to take part in the annual Boston Marathon. These runners of course have as one of their goals to complete the Marathon and in the best time they are capable of; which as most know is no easy task, but many will also be running to raise money to benefit their selected charities. South Boston Today will proudly highlight the profiles of some of these fine athletes from week to week and the charities they will be assisting; with different runners being mentioned in our editions leading up to the Patriots Day event itself.
This week we have the pleasure of highlighting Dan Rull, Beth McGuire and Annie Morgan – Three outstanding athletes with big hearts and the charities they will be running for.

Dan Rull

I am running my third Boston Marathon this year along with fellow” L Streeters” Mark Porter and Sean Campbell for the APT Fighting Chance Foundation, a non-profit organization who assist families currently battling cancer.

I am a 42-year-old father of three from Southie who originally took up running so I could keep up with my then 3 year old son. I ran my first 10k (the run for Charlotte) April of 2014 and my first Boston Marathon one year later in April 2015.  Since then I ran Boston and Chicago marathons in 2016 along with numerous 1/2 marathons, 10ks and 5ks. I joined L Street in 2015 and have not looked back since, it is probably one of the best life decisions I have ever made.

APT Fighting Chance Foundation is a non-profit organization that assists everyday people who are battling cancer cope with the challenges facing them on a daily basis. These range from rides to treatment centers, paying monthly utilities and mortgages bills, helping at the holidays, financial assistance however important.

With rising costs, many cancer patients simply do not have the resources available for these burdens and this is where we act and make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families.

We can’t help everybody but everybody can help someone!!!!

Beth McGuire – The Hold in the Wall Gang Camp

I never would have believed that I was capable of running any distance farther than one mile.  8 years ago, I met a friend who convinced me that running was not only fun but therapeutic.  I took it one telephone poll at a time, one mile at a time.  She said to me, ‘the first mile is the worst’ and ‘the hills are your buddies’.  I thought, ‘She must be nuts’.  After a couple of years of focus and training I completed my first marathon.  I said to myself, as did my husband Bob, ‘one and done’ and ‘never again’.

However, a year ago, I unexpectedly lost my best friend and husband.  I needed a healthy outlet to ease the pain of my grief and learn to survive.  I knew that running provided me that freedom and I set another monumental goal…to one day run the Boston Marathon.  Bob was not only a baseball coach who loved children but a huge fan of Paul Newman and this charity.  I believe he would have been proud of me that I chose The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp to represent and run the Boston Marathon on behalf of.

Why the V Foundation is Important to Me-

It’s been a long-time goal of mine to run a marathon. With help from some really amazing people and perfect timing I recently got entry into the 2017 Boston Marathon, the holy grail of all Marathons. The training and 26.2 miles represents more than just a medal – its reaching my personal goals, and having the ability to make an impact on a disease that affects most of us at some point in our own or loved one’s life. I’m also thrilled to be able to make a mark on my new city and run this surrounded by my family. I’m asking for any support you can give to help me as I run my first marathon and reach my $8.3k goal (!!) Thank you for your support in advance, and even if you can’t financially assist me a simple prayer for healthy training is always appreciated.

I will be documenting my training on my site – so feel free to visit that too -> http://schmannnnn.com/
