It is never too early to begin teaching literacy skills. That is the philosophy at St. Peter Academy where one of our toddlers recently announced to her family, “I’m a reader!” While she might not actually be able to “read” all of the words in the book, she and her classmates have developed letter recognition skills and love to “read” books from cover to cover.
Using the well regarded Opening the World of Learning curriculum, toddler and Pre-K teachers help students to build connections between letters and sounds. By incorporating well-known trade books like Corduroy, The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, and Snowy Day into the daily curriculum and ensuring access to quality materials in the classroom, student learn to love the act of reading.
Students in PreK express themselves and their ideas through writing and love visiting the classroom writing center where they write stories and letters. One student even went home and wrote “notes” to bring back for his friends at school.
Students in Kindergarten 1 begin using the Core Knowledge Curriculum which ensures that they master the building blocks of phonics and also provides exposure to songs, stories, and poems. K2 students are currently studying nursery rhymes and fables. By listening carefully these rhymes and repeating or reciting them by heart, students develop an awareness of language that will help them become better readers and writers.
Come see the young readers and writers of St. Peter Academy in action by visiting the Early Childhood Open House on Wednesday, November 8 from 9-11:30am. Appointments for individual tours can also be made by contacting the Main Office at 617-268-0750 or by emailing SPA@StPeterAcademy.com.
