It’s often been said that Braintree has become the South Boston Annex. With many former South Bostonians residing there now, it stands to reason that the great youth hockey talent that both Southie and Braintree have always been famous for would merge and become a formidable force on the ice. And so, it has.
Young Gavin O’Doherty, the grandson of Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn, nephew of South Boston’s City Councilor Ed Flynn and son of Nancy Flynn O’Doherty, Ray’s daughter and Ed’s sister was part of the outstanding Braintree team that won the Central Mass Winter Classic Tournament Mite ‘A ‘Division. The combination of great hockey talent and team work by the entire squad and excellent coaching made it happen. Along with Gavin, some of the top scorers were Luke Payzant, Tommy Ryan and Jack O’Leary. Robert Flaherty gave an outstanding goal tending performance.
The team was coached by South Boston native Joshua Blinn along with Mike Daley and Todd Payzant.
