The 4th annual presentation of scholarship awards in Memory of the late Tim ‘Doc’ Cook, who of course was a beloved member of the community and a United States Navy hero, took place last Sunday. These awards were given to 4 worthy young South Bostonians attending Boston College High School. Senior James McDonnell, Junior Jack Flaherty, Sophomore Jack Matthews and Freshman Nolan Callow were presented with the scholarship checks that will help pay for their continuing education. The presentation ceremony was held at Gate of Heaven Church after a beautiful memorial Mass. These three outstanding young men have worked hard on their academic accomplishments to be selected by the Tim ‘Doc’ Cook Scholarship committee and are well deserving of the awards.During the presentation ceremony, Joe Cook, Tim’s father made it a point to recognize some of the veterans; past and present and thanked them for their service. Among those present and mentioned were Current Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn – US Navy, Bill Ron Tremonte, a Vietnam Veteran – US Navy and Tim’s good friend and fellow South Bostonian Michael Aldred, also a US Navy veteran, who has founded the great new company ‘K Street Candles’, which Mike said will be a company that will give back by raising awareness of PTSD among so many veterans by donating 5% of all proceeds to the Timothy ‘Doc’ Cook Foundation.Joe Cook went on to mention how the foundation was made possible by unselfish people in and around our community who wanted to give back. He said that the goal is to educate our youth about serving our country with emphasis on PTS and serving our community.Since the original fundraiser for the Tim ‘Doc’ Cook Scholarship in 2014, 17 scholarships to local students at BC high have been awarded not counting the 4 given out this year.Keeping the memory of great South Bostonians alive is what this community does well. Tim ‘Doc’ Cook during his life that was cut much too short was an inspiration to so many people both during his military service and in his civilian life. The world needs more heroes in the mold of people like Tim Cook and that’s why it’s so important to remember him in a way he would surely be proud of – helping young students receive a good education.On November 3rd of this year there will be a hockey tournament in memory of Tim to help support the scholarship fund and to continue to keep the memory of this great man – this hero alive. As the months pass and the date gets closer, the details of the tourney will be announced.
