“Stop. Just stop. Please, just stop the nonsense.” These are the words of a reader, who wrote in regarding the proposal by members of the Boston City Council to allow legal non-citizens to vote in Boston’s elections. She echoes the views of so many others who have had enough of what they are calling out of control political correctness and pandering.
The goal of the proposal, according to City Council President Andrea Campbell is to make the election process “more inclusive”. But many aren’t buying it and suspect that this is just a ploy to increase the voter base of the party in power. Said one writer “If Council President Campbell thought for a minute that giving the vote to non-citizens would increase the numbers of people in the city who would vote for moderate or conservative candidates and ballot questions, there is no way such a proposal would ever see the light of day”. And let’s be clear, Americans everywhere, certainly those who reside in Boston, are well aware that there are those in positions of power, who would give the vote to people here illegally as well. But one step at a time – right?
Voting in American elections is one of the privileges that come with citizenship. If those non-citizens here legally; whether they are from Africa, Asia, Latin America or Europe want to make the effort to become citizens, we say go for it and all power to them. Let them put the time in, go through the process like the millions of legal immigrants before them did. Then, just like every American, they too will have the privilege of voting.
