Due to recent power outages and manhole fires that occurred across the district, Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn is calling on Eversource to come up with a plan to meet the public’s increased demand for power during heat waves. Councilor Flynn will be calling for a hearing on this issue in the coming weeks at the City Council.
“I spoke with constituents regarding recent power outages, some of whom rely on oxygen tanks. When it comes to heat waves, I am very concerned about the safety of our residents; in particular our seniors, children, the disabled, as well as our pets. This has been an ongoing issue for our community for some time, not just in heat waves,” said Flynn. “Since we are all paying customers of the utility companies, our communities deserve to receive reliable service. Moreover, I do not believe that those residents affected should be charged for the outages that took place.”
Flynn believes that Eversource must be candid with the community regarding whether older transformers and power lines need to be replaced, how they plan on upgrading the power source to handle the needs of the public, and what steps are taken to use generators to restore power while repairs are being made.
“In the coming weeks, I will be calling for a hearing to examine our infrastructure and whether all necessary steps are being taken to deliver power to customers. I respectfully request that Eversource come up with a concrete plan for necessary upgrades for our neighborhood. The time has come for our utility companies to invest in this infrastructure to meet the demand of increased development that has taken place in South Boston over the last couple of decades.”
