Last weekend, 20 South Boston student (pictured above) were recipients of the of the Tim ‘Doc’ Cook Scholarships. All students were ages 19 and under and will be able to use the scholarship money they received toward the tuition costs of the fine schools that they will be attending.
These young award winners demonstrated community involvement, an understanding of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and the effects of this affliction on so many members of our military, including what they have done to prevent ‘hidden wounds’. There have been many losses within the community due to suicides, addiction and PTSD that the effort the students make to help educate people about these afflictions is vital.
The keynote speaker at the ceremony was Tim Murphy. Tim Murphy is a graduate of West Point and was the captain of the hockey team there. He holds the rank of Major in the United States Army and is a Catholic Memorial hockey coach. Tim Murphy’s young son ‘Tom’ accompanied his dad at the event.
The Tim ‘Doc’ Cook Scholarship fund was started to keep the memory of ‘Doc’ alive. He was a young man taken from his family, his many friends and this community at far too young an age. He was a man who served his country in the United States Navy with honor and distinction and was a positive influence on so many, not only during his time in the military, but also during the time he spent as a civilian. Helping young students to get a good education through the scholarship fund in his name will ensure that his good work will continue in his memory. This is something Doc would surely be proud of, as his family, friends and neighborhood have always been proud of him.
