It was with heavy hearts and sadness that the South Boston Community learned of the untimely passing of Paul Skudris, affectionately known as ‘Skud’ to his many friends, neighbors and customers – admirers all. Skud owned and operated the Galley Diner on P Street in Southie since 1995. His obituary stated that ”he loved to cook and could feed an army” and he demonstrated that consistently over his nearly 25 years at the ‘Galley’, which has become a landmark to locals and visitors alike. It came as no surprise to anyone that his favorite holiday was Thanksgiving when he would always prepare a feast. He also loved Christmas Time and enjoyed playing Santa Claus and of course, also cooking up a storm.
Boston Magazine named The Galley ‘Best Diner’ because of the excellent food under Skud’s direction. Well known food critic Anthony Bourdain once said of ‘The Galley’ – Here, one could experience what corned beef hash and eggs should taste like.
But there was much more to Paul Skudris than just the excellent food he prepared and the great way he ran his unique diner. He was a welcoming personality that made every customer feel comfortable and that they belonged in his place. His personality was such that in addition to the good food folks always experienced eating at The Galley, customers just wanted to keep on returning to speak with and socialize with a genuinely good and decent guy who had a kind word for everyone.
He will be missed, of that there is no doubt. Thank you ‘Skud’ for the years of service and devotion to the South Boston Community. You are in the thoughts and prayers of all. You may be gone from this life, but you will never be forgotten.
