The annual Evacuation Day/St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast in honor of the memory of the late Jim Flaherty went off on schedule last week.
Sponsored by The South Boston Citizens Association and its president, Tom McGrath, this tradition continues to add to the spirit of the season and is one of the highlights of the big lineup of events that make this time of year in South Boston very special. It was held at the beautiful Seapoint Function Room on East Eighth Street. The food served was prepared by Domenic’s Restaurant and Catering and, as it is each year, it was absolutely delicious.
Live music was provided by Bob Fowkes and Curragh’s Fancy. The chairman of the event was Suffolk County Clerk of Court, Michael Donovan, who also acted as Master of Ceremonies. Tom McGrath stated that it was his honor to appoint Mike Donovan as chairman of the event, as Clerk Donovan has always supported the fight to preserve the historical importance of Evacuation Day which coincides with St. Patrick’s Day each year.
As is the custom at the Jim Flaherty breakfast, the Henry Knox Unsung Hero Awards were presented to outstanding members of the community, who have worked hard and put in valuable time and effort on behalf of the neighborhood.
This year’s awards went to Mona Connolly Casper, Bobby Linehan, Betty Flaherty and Oderra Jones. The work on the part of these four caring and concerned people help make a difference in the lives of others.
The Jim Flaherty Breakfast is one of the long-standing traditions that make the South Boston community very proud in the way it honors the memory of great men and women, who graced South Boston with their good work and contributions to the lives of their friends and neighbors. Jim Flaherty was such a man and his memory will live on forever.
