On Saturday, February 25, the Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. held its 30th Annual Fundraiser in the Gate of Heaven Church Lower Hall. During the event the Annual Rev. Paul V. Donovan Awards for Outstanding Catholic Youth were presented. These awards have been presented annually since 1980 to individuals who exemplify the best of what it means to live out the Catholic faith in today’s society. This award is presented as an expression of our pride in the youth of our parish. Among all the concerns and pressures of their lives, we hope that they will always recognize in the Church a concerned and true friend, a true home.
The Outstanding Catholic Youth Female Award recipient was Maggie Hart and the Male recipient was Matthew Hogan. A group of alumni and friends of Father Paul White, who started the Gatey C.Y.O. and High School basketball programs back in 1964, have contributed to a scholarship fund in his memory to go along with the Catholic Youth Award. So, both Maggie and Matt will receive a one-thousand-dollar college scholarship in Father White’s name. We congratulate Maggie & Matt on their award and wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.
The Rev. A. Paul White Award is presented annually to a woman in our community whose dedication and commitment has had a positive impact on the youth and families of the South Boston Community. Congratulations to Patricia Strumm on her award and we thank Tricia for all her hard work.
The Jack McDonough Award, which is presented each year to the outstanding male member of the community who exemplifies Christianity in today’s society and the goals of the Gate of Heaven C.Y.O. and its Alumni Association. This year’s recipient was Al Florentino. We congratulate Al and his family for being selected this year’s Jack McDonough Award recipient.
