The Wine Guy
Okay, we all know how hot it’s been the last few days; so, it might be a good idea to have something VERY cold on hand when you come back in from walking the dog and almost passing out. The following are not only very refreshing for this kind of weather, but you can hold the bottle to your forehead as well! Try any (or all) of the following to RESIST the heat-
Ch. Tour de Bonnet Blanc, 2016, ($14.99), comes from the Entre-deux-Mers region and is fruity and tangy with lemon-rind and crushed-stone character. Medium body, bright acidity and a lively finish. Always delicious. Enjoy on its own or with lighter fare. Wine lovers make a big deal about Bordeaux – and rightly so. France’s Bordeaux wine region, considered the birthplace of wine culture, has been the world’s leading source of high-quality wines for more than 200 years. With some 13,000 producers working approximately 300,000 acres of vines, no other wine region has so many wineries making so much excellent wine.
Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc, 2017, New Zealand, ($11.99), flavors of grapefruit, lychee and Meyer lemon offer crisp, citrus refreshment, complemented by aromas of fresh cut grass and cool sea air in this traditional and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. New Zealand is two small islands in the South Pacific – but it’s a big deal in the world of wine. The country’s unique geographical situation and modern approach make New Zealand wines some of the most popular in the world. The country is divided into North and South islands, both home to major New Zealand wine regions. With a combined length of 1,000 miles, the islands of New Zealand boast some 700 wineries. This one, by the way, is a natural for any kind of crisp salad, shellfish and especially cold shrimp.
Moving a little further West, Carpineto Dogajolo Toscana White 2017, ($12.99),is made from a blend of Chardonnay, Grechetto and Sauvignon Blanc. Pleasantly fruity, elegantly aromatic, it shows good body and agreeable acidity. Its fresh, harmonious taste makes it wonderful as an aperitif as well as a great match with seafood dishes, salads and white meats. The Carpineto family have been making wines in Tuscany for over 400 years and this white is one of their oldest. Less dry that the first two I mentioned, its blend of white grape varietals gives it more flexibility with food. Also, as the weather turns cooler, don’t forget to try their companion red blend, which is the classic Tuscan combination of Sangiovese and Northern Italian Cabernet-delicious!
Why not finish with some bubbles? Mionetto Prestige, Sparkling Rose, NV, ($16.99), is just the thing! In this heat, don’t be shy about putting some ice in your glass and adding a lemon twist. Brilliant peach color. Pink grapefruit, pomegranate and blackcurrant with a hint of wild rose. Well-balanced acidity with notes of red raspberry and strawberry and a fine persistent pelage. Enjoy on its own as an aperitif, with light appetizers and with fresh seafood and grilled fish. Stay cool!
