On Sunday, February 10, at the McDonough gym located inside the Walsh Community Center, the Ryan Club, coached by hoop guru, Paul Hogan, captured the 2019 Gate of Heaven CYO boys’ midget basketball house league championship, by defeating the Joey Evans Club, 24-13. Evan Pierce was South Boston Today’s MVP.
The Ryan Club took an early lead and led at the break 14-4. Trailing in the second half, the Joey Evans Club battled back but fell short when the final buzzer sounded. For the Ryan Club, Evan Pierce had eighteen points, eight rebounds and one steal. Alex Beaulieu had four points and Donovan Lombard contributed a deuce. For the Joey Evans Club, Aiden Colton had six points, Liam Colton had five, and Derek Austin finished with a deuce.
“These kids were great all season,” said Coach Hogan. “The best kids during my past seven years of coaching CYO basketball. And Evan Pierce is by far the best player in this league as well as a really tremendous kid.”
