Hugs and smiles abound during morning arrival at St. Peter Academy Pre-K! Students are eager to come to school in the morning and to dive right in to center-based activities with their classmates and teachers. According to one parent, Kevin Larade, “The teachers are clearly invested in their classroom and provide a welcoming environment for all the students as they are being dropped off each morning. Our daughter speaks glowingly of both teachers and has a comfort level that makes us very happy with her program and the fine staff that are currently running it. We can’t say enough positive things about the work they are doing with her and her class”
Teachers in Pre-K utilize the well-respected “Opening the World of Learning” curriculum to provide rigorous and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for students ages 2.9 and up. Daily circle time often includes singing together, and sometimes a special student “share”. The day includes whole class and center-based activities designed to promote early literacy skills, mathematical understanding, and science concepts. Throughout the week students also meet with specialist teachers for art, music, physical education and Spanish instruction.
At times, special projects are also incorporated to supplement and enhance the curriculum. One such project was the making of “Culture Cases” where students worked at home with families to make visual representations of their family culture(s) to share with the class. Students learned about classmates’ family traditions rooted in nationality, religion, and other aspect of family identity. Students enjoyed learning that families celebrate different holidays and speak different languages. “We were excited about the culture project that was recently initiated in their class. It was a very creative and fun project and it provided us with the opportunity to educate our daughter about her background”, says Mr. Larade.
